 Karen Demirchyan Yerevan Subway

About Yerevan Metro

The Karen Demirchyan Yerevan Subway, also know as the Yerevan Metro, operating since 1981, is a pivotal element of Yerevan’s public transportation. This metro system, named after influential Armenian leader Karen Demirchyan, encompasses a single line with ten stations, running over 13.4 kilometers. The line links key areas from Barekamutyun in the northwest to Charbakh in the southeast. Constructed during the Soviet era, the subway stations are notable for their architectural grandeur, showcasing Armenian heritage through intricate designs and decorations.

The subway was developed to mitigate traffic congestion and streamline urban mobility in Yerevan. Despite the economic hardships that followed the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Yerevan Metro has managed to sustain operations, providing a cost-effective and reliable transport solution. Efforts to modernize the subway continue, focusing on improving infrastructure, enhancing safety, and increasing passenger comfort, ensuring it meets contemporary standards and future demands.

The construction of the 11th station (Ajapnyak)of the Yerevan Metro was initially planned during the Soviet era, but the project remained dormant for many years. Currently, city authorities are eager to bring the project to fruition. A design competition was held, and “Metrogiprotrans” emerged as the winning company. By 2023, the project will be ready, paving the way for the announcement of the construction competition. Trains will travel to Ajapnyak from the Barekamutyun metro station through two tunnels towards the gorge. At that point, a 152-meter metro bridge will be constructed to complete the route.

The completion of this project is expected to significantly enhance the metro network by providing better connectivity and easing transportation for Yerevan’s residents. The new station and the associated infrastructure developments represent a significant step forward in the modernization of the city’s public transport system.
